How I found Goju Ryu karate
« on: October 01, 2006, 05:05:58 PM »

I am one of the oldest students Shihan has(I'm older than Shihan but don't tell him)
I started my martial arts training aged 40 I quit smoking (50-60 a day)and decided to get fit!.
When I was a young man I did a lot of running consequently my knee joints are worn out,so I couldn't go back to running.
My wife Amanda was at the time training in shotokan karate, we had 2 young children so could not  train togeather. I looked around and found Tai chi , I started training and throughly enjoyed it for 2 years, then I felt something was missing? I looked around and did a form of Kung fu, first belt was  Wing chung (close in fighting) next was Long monk boxing(long distance) next belt was for sword and so on, it was for all round self defence. Then the  instructor was selected for the England squad and closed the club!!! I went to Shihan Pauls class to see what Go ju ryu involved and here was a style which encompassed all I knew and more!! it was close in, long distance, had locks throws in fact more than I need !! The best thing I have found is Shihan Paul, his knowledge sorry!!! depth of knowledge, style of teaching, indepth explainations, have opened up a new world for me.
Some nights when I train I wish I could stay on later(I have to be up at 4 am sometimes earlier)
So I have to leave to get something to eat, shower etc.
I think not only is Shihan a Master grade he is also a Master Sensi, I have trained with  many different clubs around Oxford, also when I have gone away on holiday, my wife gets mad at me "this is our holiday" I wont say what she calls me!!! and even though I have enjoyed training with the different styles, and the friendlyness of the fellow students in all the different styles, my heart is firmly with Goju Ryu.
I should also add some of the clubs i have trained in, are teaching ***t, in one club I refused to do there warm up as I thought it was dangerous (I did our warm up myself). So all Shihan Pauls students should be thankful, as I am that we are lucky to have such in depth training and an excellent Master Sensi to guide us. I should add that I have been teaching my own students for over 1yr at Didcot (hopefully half as good as Shihan)
I hold a J.K.F. 2nd dan and even though I have only been with Shihan 8yrs I hope he likes my karate .

Colin is proof that people can start at any age, but not just that ...... he has not only got to black belt, but even 2nd Dan .... AND he's now teaching. I'm impressed. Where is he from though? Such a strange accent. :-\

Hi Funky

I hail from   "The Land Of The Prince Of Bishops" (its very north of here)
I was sent down here 20 odd years ago to do missionary work!!!
Unfortunately no one could understand what I was saying !!!
So now after retraining and learning a new language with Shihans help
(Geordie-Japanese) I am once again out and about teaching !!!
You may have noticed in class sometimes Shihan will tell me something in my
language, this is because he can tell by the expression on my face if I can understand .
Well Funky " ive goto gan yam  bonnie laud il c theen clas."

                              Regards Colin.

Having left home as a 15 year old and not knowing where to head for in the big wide world, I believe karate has afforded me a lifetime of challenges, exitement and an opportunity to meet some exceptional people. After more than 3 decades of Goju Ryu, I'm still meeting new challenges, meeting interesting people and travelling to many countries. I'm glad I chose karate to be such a strong feature in my life.

I first started Goju in Summertown under James Rousseau and then Peter Rousseau, that was 1974. I still enjoy training over 3 decades later.
